I got invited earlier this year to take part in our friend Kyle Kensing’s “Detmer Award” over at Saturday Blitz. What exactly is the “Detmer Award”? Here is how he describes it:
The five non-BCS conferences and 75 percent of the independents are differentiated from the Big Six in virtually every other facet, so it only makes sense the best players from this subdivision-subdivision have an award for its best player. Just as fitting is for this honor to bear the name of the last player from one of these universities to win college football’s top honor, 1990 Heisman winner and BYU quarterback Ty Detmer. SaturdayBlitz.com will track this completely exclusive field’s progress throughout the season.
We are honored to be asked to vote on this award alongside such great bloggers like Patrick Johnson from Big East Coast Bias, the guys from the Upset Blog, the Navy Bird Dog, and Kevin McGuire of the National Football Examiner (and virtually every other college football blog on the internet) among others. Here is my week eight ballot from last week. Here are the cumulative results from the group for this week. You have to click on the link but I will say that Case Keenum and Kellen Moore were neck and neck before this week. Speaking of Keenum and Moore, if you missed our article on them from last week make sure you click here to read it.
Here is my week nine ballot based on game performance and remember, this is a week by week voting. We are not voting on their cumulative play for the entire season. Points are given each week and the one with the most points at the end of the year will get the award. Feel free to chime in with who you would have voted for based on last weeks performance…
#1 Case Keenum, QB, Houston- The most impressive thing Case Keenum did last week was have a fantastic outing the day before I posted an article I had been working on about him and Kellen Moore. Not only is he a great QB but he has a great sense of timing. Seriously though, 9 TDs and 534 yards? Are you kidding me? I don’t care if it was against Matt Elder State it was the most impressive showing of the weekend.
#2 Brett Smith, QB, Wyoming- How bout them Cowboys? They quietly moved to 5-2 this week by pulling off an upset on the road against San Diego State. Smith was the ringleader as he threw 2 TD passes and ran for 2 TDs. He was also 25/36 for 341 yards which ain’t too shabby.
#3 Ryan Aplin, QB, Arkansas State- I was one of the only guys to vote for Aplin last week so I’m going to do it again until it catches on and becomes a trend. Whoever manages Hugh Freeze’s twitter account re-tweeted one of my articles and dammit, I owe him one. Aplin was 28/42 for 322 yards and 3 TD and also led the team in rushing with 69 yards. Yes, it was just North Texas but Arkansas State is now 6-2 and 4-0 in the Sun Belt.
#4 A.J. Graham- QB, Marshall- In just his third start of his career he tossed 5 TDs and led his team to a 59-14 victory. Not a bad stat line…19/27 239 5 TDs
#5 Jordan White, WR, Western Michigan- He had 9 catches for 172 yds and 2 TD. Could have gone to the entire receiving corps as they had 3 100 receivers in their victory.
