Iowa – Northwestern U 49.5

Northwestern’s defensive weakness lies in their inability to defend the pass, where they rank dead last in the Big Ten allowing 291 ypg. The problem for Iowa is their passing game is terrible this season. The Hawkeyes are 11th in the Big Ten averaging 170 passing yards per game, and they are last in the league in pass efficiency and completion percentage. Iowa’s senior QB, James Vandenberg, has struggled only throwing 3 TD’s and 5 INT’s.

In fact neither of these teams really have any offensive playmakers. Iowa averages 4.93 yards per play (11th in the B1G) & Northwestern is 6th at 5.19 ypp.

But defensively Iowa has a very solid unit. The Hawkeyes are 5th in the Big Ten allowing 20.83 ppg to teams that avg 24.86 ppg. Northwestern is 6th allowing 25.29 ppg, but that is against teams that average 25.82 ppg.

Iowa is only averaging 19.83 ppg on offense against teams that allow 23.25 ppg. I believe both defenses should be able to hold the other pedestrian offense at or below their offensive season averages. Tough to see this one turning into a shootout.

Northwestern 24 Iowa 21
